An 'around the world honeymoon adventure' with Snowdon was the adventure of 2010. The adventure of 2011 is living in Singapore and experiencing the pleasures of Asia; warm climate, lovely food, an abundance of culture, new family and friends, and meanwhile re-adapting to living away from the delights of NZ; family, friends, fresh air, nature and a relaxed lifestyle, hence our eventual resting place.

First night in Playa Carmen (The Nicoya Peninsula)

Our hire car got dropped to our Jaco hostel first thing in the morning.  It was very exciting slipping my little board in between the seats (and later using my brand new travel racks - thanks Fraser and Kate).  I’m finally going to christen the new fish!!!

After:
  •  several hours drive from San Jose (see photo of map on GPS)

  • several hours excitedly waiting for the ferry in the blazing sun in Puntarenas (see photo of view from the ferry)

  • an hour long, very festive ferry ride
  • then several hours negotiating a very pot holey dirt road (ah so that’s why 4WD was obligatory)
  • stopping for money in Cobano (that last shot is a photo Snowdon from the car when I was in the bank – this guy looking at staunch with the gun was actually very helpful)

and we were there!

We arrived hot, hungry, dusty and sweaty, but we had finally arrived at the beach town that we set out to find that morning.  I groveled/insisted that we were finally near a beach in Costa Rica (my dream for so many years) and that we had to at least see the beach and stop for a swim (even if we probably didn’t have the time for a surf before dark).  Snowdon was intent on finding some accommodation, but relented.

We drove down to the beach and were awestruck!  Beautiful blue peeling waves with white sand and lush tall green trees as far as the eye could see in either direction.  Well this is what I’d been dreaming about for years (16 years), ever since I spotted Costa Rica on Endless Summer.  We jumped in and ah-hah that water was sooo warm!  Snowdon brought the camera in with us and we got some great shots (even a few videos – hopefully I can work out how to put one on here).  Snowdon left his jandals there for one of the locals to pick up. Nice of him…

Snowdon said this was the new best beach he’d ever been at (better even than Taupo Bay) and straight after our swim, over dinner reflected that that swim was a premier moment (in his own words of course).  Dinner was absolutely delicious, and later would turn out to be a favourite of ours. I had Casado de pescado.  Casado is a local dish, with generous portions of rice, beans, veg, and then meat of your choice (I always get fish).  Man my dish at ‘Burger Rancho’ that night was tasty!  And oh it was so lovely and warm!

That experience of an incredible swim on a dream beach and a lovely meal didn’t outlast the several hours of driving up and down the Playa Carmen street to find affordable accommodation, for Snowdon.  For me it lasted many more hours – I’d found the place I’d been dreaming about!
